Lesson Four - Measuring Area with standard units

Group Task 1
In this Lesson we will be working in our groups again. Together grab some of the 1 square cm tiles that are in the classroom. Go around the classroom and measure items. Ideas could be measure the cover of a book, the surface of your desk or any items you can think of. Write down your measurements to discuss as a class.
Group Task 2
Your next task together is to go outside and measure the basketball court with the square centimeter tiles. Do this for about one minute and then answer these questions together.
Discussion Topics
1. Explain why using square centimeter is not the best measurement for the basketball court.
2. As a group give some advice about what would be a better measurement.
