Learning Outcomes

Area and perimeter can be challenging and confusing concepts for primary students to grasp.  This webquest is designed to ensure students have a conceptual understanding of area and perimeter through the use of ICT, practical application and thorough foundational knowledge.  Students will be introduced to using efficient means to calculate area and perimeter without the use of formula which is introduced in secondary schooling.   Lessons have been designed to be inclusive of the diversity of the classroom including culture and cognitive development.   During the course of this webquest students will be developing their personal capabilities in literacy, numberacy, ICT skills, creative and critical thinking.

Prior Knowledge for Measurement Area (Year 5 students)

Australian Curriculum (ACARA, 2015)

In Year 3 students would have:

-measured, ordered and compared using familiar metric units of length (ACMMGO61)

In Year 4 students would have:

-compared objects using familiar metric units of area (ACMMG290)

-compared the areas of regular and irregular shapes by informal means. (ACMMG087)

-compare and describe two dimensional shapes that result from combining and splitting common shapes, with and without the use of digital technologies. (ACMMG088)

- Recall multiplication facts up to 10 x 10 (ACMNA075)

In Year 5 students will be expected to:

-calculate perimeter and area of rectangle using familiar metric units (ACMMG109)

Foundational prior knowledge that I am assuming students poses are:

  1. Understanding of tiling as described by (Simeon,2011) “the same unit is iterated” and “can occur when units  are....side-to-side as square tiles may be in measuring area”

  2. Understanding of shape and ability to describe rectangles

  3. Fluency in measuring length with non-standard and standard units

  4. Use of grids for counting in rows or columns, skip counting and multiplication (Mulligan, Prescott, Mitchelmore & Outhred, 2005)

Lessons are described in more detail with links to curriculum descriptors and mathematical proficiencies encompassed.
