Lesson 5- Understanding the relationship between perimeter and area

Students will develop ICT skills through the use of an excel spreadsheet with pre-set formula to calculate area and perimeter.

Students will be asked to keep perimeter constant and see if they can change the area.  According to (Simeon et al, 2011, p. 609) students can hold a "misconception that perimeter and area have a fixed relationship".  This lesson will challenge this misconception as well as reinforce the concepts of both area and perimeter.

Responses from students will be received via the comment box where students can work collaboratively online to discover if there is a relationship between perimeter and area.

ACMMG109 Calculate perimeter and are of rectangles using familiar metric units

Proficiency Strands

This lesson will encourage students to use their understanding to interpret results of calculations of  area and perimeter and describe whether there is a relationship or not.  They will use reasoning to compare the results and make deductions about relationships of area and perimeter.
