Lesson 2- In-Direct comparison using non-standard units of Area

This lesson will build on the first by using the same shapes to compare using grids and students will be able to compare areas without printing shapes.   Students will discover the use of in-direct comparison and why it can be useful.  ICT skills will be developed when producing a grid in word and using this to calculate a non-standard measurement of area.

If students are first taught the concept of measurement with a grid this then leads an understanding of the concept of area and perimeter.  “Teaching that focuses on the recognition of the structure of an area grid is likely to lay the foundation for a deeper understanding of area” (Mulligan et al, 2005) 5-8.  Activities that compares and asks which area is biggest.

Students are able to watch a video using comparison of area.

Self assessment tools are in the form of games at the end of the lesson.

ACMMG290 Compare objects using familiar metric units of area and volume

ACMMG087  Compare the areas of regular and irregular shapes by informal means

Proficiency Strand

Students will be lead to understanding of why we use measurement to compare shapes such as rectangles.  The Lesson allows students to explore the concept of in-direct comparison through different approaches such as video explanation, investigation with word and  IT games.
