Lesson 1- Direct Comparing of Area and use of non-std units

This lesson is designed as a revision exercise and also to access student's prior knowledge. Students are introduced to the concept of comparing surface area and the difficulties that can occur when shapes become more complex and the “‘look and compare’ strategy becomes increasingly difficult” (Simeon et al, 2011, p606). Students learning about the concept of area without the use of formula.

Group One & Four- Includes complex shapes to challenge thinking

Group Two & Three- Includes one complex shape and simple rectangle shapes.

Responses from students will be received via the comment box and I suggest that the class have a group discussion to also verify students knowledge of area.
