Lesson 7 & 8 - Design brief and project

 

In these lessons students will be working on a design brief that encourages them to explore the internet and other sources for ideas on how to use the concepts of area and perimeter to design a room.

 

Australian Curriculum

Year 5

ACMMG109 Calculate perimeter and area of rectangles using familiar metric units

 

Proficiency Strands 

All Australian Curriculum proficiencies of understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning are focused on in this design project (ACARA, 2015).  Students will show their understanding of area and perimeter through connections with real life decisions that require this knowledge. Fluency can be demonstrated with choice of correct meaurements by students.  Problems solving will need to occur to priotise and decide what will fit into the space through use of area and perimeter measurements.  Reasoning will occur if students use strategies to calculate area and perimeter in efficient ways.
